Answers to Waste Control

For the convenience of the public, the Ministry of Health has today released a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) document to supplement the Strategic Outline Case for the Cayman Islands Integrated Solid Waste Management System, which it published last month.

Officials believe the easy-to-digest FAQs will help the public find easy answers to many of their questions about the project.

HIV Testing Week

Free HIV testing will be available for all Cayman Islands residents during HIV Testing Week 2014 from Monday, 23 to Saturday, 28 June 2014.

The Health Services Authority (HSA), the Cayman AIDS Foundation (CAF) and the Cayman Islands Red Cross have joined forces to organise HIV Testing Week. This observance will promote awareness of HIV prevention through media appearances. In addition organisers have planned free HIV testing and voluntary counseling across the Islands, by trained and experienced personnel.

Chikungunya Update

Following the continued regional outbreak of the chikungunya virus, local medical personnel are on high alert.

Staff of the Health Services Authority (HSA) and other local medical services providers have been advised to look for any local cases,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kiran Kumar.
Dr Kumar added, “So far there have been no suspected cases in the Cayman Islands, should there be any we have arrangements with the Caribbean Public Health Agency in Trinidad (CARPHA) for Laboratory testing.”

Workshop Paves the Way for HIV Operational Plans

Minister Bodden gives opening remarks

A two-day HIV/AIDS workshop brought together local medical professionals, government staff, NGO’s, and private sector groups on Wednesday, 4 June and Thursday, 5 June.

Health Minister, Hon. Osbourne Bodden opened the workshop at the Hibiscus Conference Room located at the Health Services Authority. Meanwhile, Ministry of Health Chief Officer Jennifer Ahearn joined Medical Officer of Health Dr Kiran Kumar and various stakeholders, to review and make the recommended changes to the existing policy and develop an operational plan for the HIV and AIDS programme.

World Cup Reminder: Travelers to Get Vaccinated

The Public Health Department reminds residents who plan to travel to the World Cup, during the period June 12 – July 13, 2014, to complete their vaccinations at least two weeks ahead of travel.
“All residents of the Cayman Islands travelling to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, including delegation members and media personnel, should be fully vaccinated against measles and rubella prior to their travel” said Medical Officer of Health, Dr Kumar.

Minister's Message for World No Tobacco Day

Every year, on 31 May, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners everywhere celebrate World No Tobacco Day.

The purpose of the observance is to bring global attention to the health risks associated with tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

As a WHO partner, and one of the 178 countries that are a party to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the Cayman Islands is a proud supporter of this initiative and proud to be a leader in tobacco control efforts in the Caribbean region.

Nellie Pouchie-Solomon, Ministry of Health’s new Chief Financial Officer.

Following an open competition recruitment process, another Caymanian has been promoted to the rank of Chief Financial Officer. After three years as its Deputy Chief Financial Officer, Nellie Pouchie-Solomon has moved into the top financial position at the Ministry of Health.

Support for Smokers to Quit

The Public Health Department is urging members of the public to enlist in its ‘I Can Quit’ smoking cessation programme.

Scheduled to begin on 4 June 2014, the programme will run for seven weeks on Wednesdays from 5:30pm to 6: 30 pm, at the Public Health Department.
‘I Can Quit’ empowers smokers to quit the habit, and works in tandem with ongoing support from key healthcare providers.

Vaccinate Against Measles and Rubella

The Public Health Department has issued a health advisory to Cayman Islands residents who will be attending the World Cup in Brazil from June 12 through July 13 2014.
“The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO ) recommend that all residents of the Americas travelling to the 2014 FIFA World Cup are fully vaccinated against measles and rubella, to maintain the elimination of both diseases in the region,” commented Medical Officer of Health, Dr Kiran Kumar.

New Mental Health Commission

The Mental Health Commission Law was tabled and passed in the Legislative Assembly in May 2013. In December 2013, the members of the Mental Health Commission were appointed by Cabinet and the Commission held its first meeting in February 2014.

The Commission consists of stakeholders from various sectors representing legal, health care practitioners with training in mental health, and advocates/laypersons.
