CI Gov’t and PAHO Agree on Biennial Plan

Senior Managers of the HSA, Minister for Health Hon. Osbourne Bodden along with Ministry’s Chief Officer Jennifer Ahearn and other officials met with Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Representative of Jamaica, Bermuda & Cayman Islands, Margareta Skold (stationed in Jamaica) earlier this month to develop a strategic Biennial Work Plan for 2014-15.

Recall Of Dietary OxyElite Pro Dietary Supplements

Following recall by the manufacturers of the dietary supplement OxyElite Pro in the United States, the Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kiran Kumar is advising persons to immediately cease taking these supplements.

Additionally all local distributors and retailers are being advised to immediately remove the product from their stocks.

On November 9, 2013, USPSLabs LLC, of Dallas, Texas announced the recall of certain OxyElite Pro dietary supplement products.

Healthcare Practitioner Licence Necessary to Provide Injections

The Health Practice Commission (HPC) wishes to advise the public of the risk that persons who are not medically trained or licensed may be offering injections for ‘beauty’ purposes.

By law any person who carries out injections on another must possess a health practitioner’s licence to practice that includes a health practitioner’s registration certificate.

Furthermore such treatments must take place in a registered health care facility. This can be confirmed by checking or requesting to see a certificate to operate a health care facility.

World Diabetes Day Message from Minister Bodden

Diabetes is one of the world’s most preventable epidemics. This year as we observe World Diabetes Day, around the globe 371 million people and their families are living with diabetes. Another 280 million are at high risk of developing the disease.

If this is not alarming enough, half a billion people are expected to be living with diabetes by 2030, according to the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization.

Dengue Case Confirmed

Public Health officials have confirmed a case of dengue fever, brought in by a visitor to the Islands.

Since July 2013 there have been five cases investigated for dengue; of the four results received thus far from Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) three were negative and one was positive. The result is still pending. The confirmed case was symptomatic prior to arrival and sought medical attention the next day.

A Day for Mental Health

Pine resident gets treated to a neck massage.

In celebration of World Mental Health Day last Friday (10 October) which had Mental Health and Older Adults as the theme – Health Services Authority (HSA) staff provided therapeutic services to residents at the Pines Retirement Home.

This included hand and body massages. There was also room for some dance and sing-a-long.

On average mental disorders account for some 24% of diseases in our region. Of these, depression is by far the most prevalent.

Flu Activity in Cayman
